What is the DELE B1?

The DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) is the official Spanish diploma awarded by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education. It is recognised internationally and never expires.

The exam has four parts: reading, listening, writing and speaking. They are split into two groups – you need at least 30 out of 50 points in each group.

At B1 level the topics are familiar ones from everyday life, school, work and leisure: you understand the main points of texts and conversations and can talk about experiences, plans and opinions.

How to learn the vocabulary for the DELE B1

1
15 minutes a day

Short and regular beats long and rare. Two or three sets a week get you through all topics in a few months.

2
Recall, don’t just read

Words you retrieve from memory yourself stick longer. Switch between quiz, matching and typing – and practise in both directions.

3
Use new words straight away

Write a few sentences on each topic and talk about it for a minute – that’s also practice for the writing and speaking parts.

4
Don’t forget linking words

In essays and conversations, connectors like “por un lado”, “cependant” or “außerdem” make a difference. They have their own topic.
