What is the DSD I?

The Deutsches Sprachdiplom (DSD) of the German Standing Conference of Education Ministers is taken at more than 1,000 schools in around 65 countries. The DSD I tests levels A2 and B1; with B1 you can attend a Studienkolleg (university foundation course) in Germany.

It tests reading, listening, written and spoken communication. You register through your school.

For every part you need solid core vocabulary on everyday topics – nouns with article and plural, and the forms of the verbs.

How to learn the vocabulary for the DSD I

1
15 minutes a day

Short and regular beats long and rare. Two or three sets a week get you through all topics in a few months.

2
Recall, don’t just read

Words you retrieve from memory yourself stick longer. Switch between quiz, matching and typing – and practise in both directions.

3
Use new words straight away

Write a few sentences on each topic and talk about it for a minute – that’s also practice for the writing and speaking parts.

4
Don’t forget linking words

In essays and conversations, connectors like “por un lado”, “cependant” or “außerdem” make a difference. They have their own topic.
