What is the DELF B1?

The DELF (Diplôme d’études en langue française) is the official French diploma of the French Ministry of Education, run by France Éducation international. It is recognised worldwide and never expires – many schools offer the DELF scolaire.

The exam has four parts worth 25 points each: listening, reading, writing and speaking. You pass with at least 50 out of 100 points, as long as you score at least 5 in every part.

The written parts take just under two hours together; the speaking test is taken individually. At B1 you speak and write about everyday life, experiences and your opinion.

How to learn the vocabulary for the DELF B1

1
15 minutes a day

Short and regular beats long and rare. Two or three sets a week get you through all topics in a few months.

2
Recall, don’t just read

Words you retrieve from memory yourself stick longer. Switch between quiz, matching and typing – and practise in both directions.

3
Use new words straight away

Write a few sentences on each topic and talk about it for a minute – that’s also practice for the writing and speaking parts.

4
Don’t forget linking words

In essays and conversations, connectors like “por un lado”, “cependant” or “außerdem” make a difference. They have their own topic.

Frequently asked questions

How many words do I need for the DELF B1?▾

At B1 you should be confident with core vocabulary on everyday topics. The Lenguvo sets contain around 1,300 words and phrases in 19 topics – including linking words and phrases for letters and opinion texts.

Can I practise the DELF vocabulary for free?▾

Yes. You can practise every set for free with flashcards, quiz, matching and word search – even without signing up. With a free account, Lenguvo saves your progress and repeats difficult words.

Do I need to learn the articles?▾

Yes – in French a lot depends on the gender of nouns. That’s why every card shows the article (le, la, l’, les), and for l’ whether the word is masculine or feminine.

Is this the official DELF word list?▾

No. The sets are Lenguvo’s own B1 core vocabulary for preparation, not official exam material.
